W Series hit Hungary for Round 4 of the 2021 championship. The series put on another Jamie Chadwick vs Alice Powell fight where Chadwick emerged victorious for the second time this season.

Powell comfortably grabbed second place but was unable to close in on Chadwick throughout the ~30-minute race. She now relinquishes control of the championship to her compatriot rival by a solitary point.

The consistency of Nerea Martí, the rookie who has grabbed points at each and every round, has paid off with her first W Series podium. The Spanish teenager now jumps to third in the championship standings after her third-place finish at the Hungaroring.

Here’s what the three had to say to us at GP Grandstand when we spoke to them after the race:

Jamie Chadwick: “It’s hard to catch up”

Q: You’ve said about the championship ebbing and flowing. Last time it flowed to Alice who you couldn’t get close to. This time the opposite. What’s changing between these weekends? Preferred tracks, setups?

If you dial it in quicker then it’s hard to catch up like we saw with Alice last weekend and with me this weekend.

Scenarios aren’t changing so it’s hard to get ahead easily, but like I said it’s going to ebb and flow I’m sure throughout the year.

Alice Powell: “Plenty to play for”

Q: The field spread was notable again in Hungary. Do you see the hard-wearing tyres as part of that? You couldn’t catch up with Jamie… Would you like to see more degrading tyres like in F1?

Erm…yeh, potentially. I expected to have a lot more oversteer in the race than I did, but I was struggling a lot with understeer. As well as quite a big vibration that I touched on on the radio coming into the pit lane before we went to the grid. That progressively got worse.

I’m not sure if that was something on the tyre or the brakes. But by the end of it my fingers were quite sore and I had to keep moving them around because it was vibrating quite a lot on the wheel.

We would’ve liked to have been a lot closer in the race but second place is still solid points. In 2019 I would’ve taken being in this position. There’s still four races left and plenty to play for.

Nerea Martí: “I’ve got high motivation”

Q: You’ve come in extremely consistent with your results so far. Are you surprised with how well you have done or were you expecting to be on the podium at this point in the championship?

Erm… yeh. I’ve got high motivation because I know at each race I have a good progression now. And this is this way because my motivation, my speed each race is better. So I will fight a lot and try to stay on the podium again.
