W Series in Austria has given us six drivers on the podium across the two weekends. Jamie Chadwick came home in first place this time out.
She was joined by a delighted first-timer in Irina Sidorkova and the hard-working Emma Kimilainen who ran the Russian close.
Here are what the top three from Round 2 in Austria had to say to us at GP Grandstand:
Jamie Chadwick: “Head down; do a consistent job”
Q: A great day for Williams with yourself and George Russell getting P9. How are you finding the weekends supporting F1 compared to 2019, and are you able to interact with the Williams team at all?
Yeh, of course, it’s been difficult with the Covid bubbles to have much interaction with them. But it’s very cool to see George make it to Q3. Super proud of the team and I think after last weekend his performance was kinda inevitable to be up there. I made sure they told me on the radio.
I think from my perspective it’s an amazing experience to be on this F1 weekend. It really is a big step up. Very proud to be in W Series this year.
Q: Beitske hasn’t scored points this year so that’s hurting her championship. We saw how much that hurt Emma not scoring in the first half of 2019. So now who do you think your championship contenders will be for this year and are there any surprises?
A lot of surprises but at the same time, I think that the nature of the championship this year is quite different compared to 2019. It’s going to ebb and flow once more, but yeah, from my perspective it’s head down and do a consistent job. Hopefully that’s enough to bring the points in and the championship home
Irina Sidorkova: “I have more patience now”
Q: Irina, do you feel the pressure is off a little bit now knowing you’ll be on the grid for two seasons, and did it make this weekend any easier?
Of course, when you know you’ll be racing next year anyway it makes it easier so I have more patience now. But anyway it’s not a reason for me to relax, take things slow or stop fighting, anyway.
Of course, I’m happy about that and I’m so proud to be in the Academy. I’m so proud to be racing next year. But anyway, I’ll do my best for this season and hope to be faster in the next round.
Emma Kimilainen: “A definite 2nd place without the penalty”
Q: Emma, it was a redemption day for you… A great overtake on Tomaselli. Do you think, because you clearly had the pace, if it wasn’t for the grid penalty that a win could’ve been on the cards considering Jamie’s pace?
I don’t know if I would’ve had the win. [Chadwick] was really quick today. But yeh, a definite second place. You never know what’s going to happen. I started in P6 and ended up in P3 and did a consistent job there so anything can happen during the race…
