MP Motorsport were rightly delighted by Felipe Drugovich’s superb qualifying session for F2’s Sakhir race weekend. But they were also left rueing Guiliano Alesi’s misfortune as the Schumacher/Nissany crash ruined both their driver’s final attempt to leap up the order.
Drugovich looked strong all session and was unfortunate to be caught out by the Turn 6 bump on his first hot lap which threw him off the road.
In the early stages of the session Alesi was showing well in P9 mid session but had slipped to P16 before the final runs. Guiliano appeared to find new form last weekend for the Bahrain races and while he didn’t manage to score points, he produced a strong qualifying session.
Sakhir F2: Alesi Season Recap
It has been a difficult second season in F2 for Alesi. His 6th place finish in the opening race in Austria remains his only points finish this campaign. The news that he had been dropped by the Ferrari Driver Academy and that his famous father, Jean, could no longer afford to his junior career were a double blow.
Alesi’s move to MP Motorsport to replace Noboharu Matsushita from Round 10 in Russia was not the hoped for key to unlocking more performance from the young French driver. Alesi has yet to announce where he will next be racing or whether he will hang up his helmet for good.
Sakhir F2: Drugovich Season Recap
His team mate Drugovich has been highly impressive at times this year and no doubt will be a championship contender next season. The Brazilian rookie’s two Sprint Race wins this season were bolstered by his absolute domination of the Feature Race last time out. Felipe boasts the interesting record of having no podiums except for wins in F2. Consistency and performance across multiple track types will surely be a focus for the winter and 2021.
Sakhir F2: MP Motorsport Season Recap
It’s been a rejuvenating season for MP Motorsport following the woes of 2019. Four wins already this season and with a strong chance of Drugovich adding a 5th this weekend, MP have the air of a team who have found themselves in a good place and could even mount a title challenge next season. It will be interesting to see who they place in their cars next year. I hope they retain Drugovich and if the second driver is of equal calibre, the Dutch team will be a fearsome challenge for their competitors.
