Swiss driver, Ralph Boschung, will return to Formula 2 in 2021 after sitting out the 2020 season. Boschung will drive for Campos, who he drove for in his first F2 campaign in 2017.

The Swiss driver brings backing for the Spanish outfit to fund his 2021 season. Boschung yo-yo’d in and out of the 2019 championship where he raced for Trident due to financing problems. He will be hoping the additional backing will ensure a full season of racing next year.

Boschung’s Twitter account had a suggestive post sent out to it this morning. Although it was a great piece of marketing, the news came amid Lewis Hamilton’s positive COVID test, and Prema promoting Oscar Piastri to Formula 2 for 2021. The news may have been overlooked by some.

Nonetheless, the announcement came and Boschung and Campos both issued their statements.

Boschung’s, in particular, suggests he is confident that his partners with the chequebook will be able to pay for the full Formula 2 2021 season. Perhaps this is an example of the cost-cutting measures brought in by the FIA beginning to bear fruit?

Ralph Boschung on returning to Formula 2 in 2021:

“I am proud to join Campos Racing. I have tremendous respect for this team and I am convinced that we will have a great season in 2021. I would like to thank Adrián Campos for his trust as well as my new partners Casa Andrea and L by Raphaëlle alongside MedXcell for their continued support. This is the first time in my career I have had a contract secured so early and I look forward to a successful year where I will be able to focus purely on the sport.”

The news doesn’t look promising for Jack Aitken who, despite a decent enough campaign this season, is the likely man to make way for Boschung. Aitken has been an everpresent in Formula 2 since 2018, but it looks as though 2021 may be a season too far.

Jack’s teammate that he has roundly outperformed in 2020, Guilherme Samaia, is set to join Boschung at the post-season test in Bahrain next week. A Boschung-Samaia Formula 2 Campos line-up for 2021 seems inevitable.
