The 2020 Formula 3 champion, Oscar Piastri, will join the Formula 2 ranks for 2021. The Australian Prema driver has been retained by the team but will be racing their F2 car next season.
Piastri won two races and reached the podium on a further four occasions in the 2020 F3 season on his way to the title. Oscar will follow in the footsteps of current Prema drivers, Robert Shwartzman and Mick Schumacher. Both men graduated to the F2 team after winning the title for Prema in the lower category.
With how well the Shwartzman/Schumacher partnership is working for Prema in 2020, where they lead the Teams’ championship, lightning could strike twice for Italians. Should the current F3 champion and the previous champ be as potent in 2021, further success could come their way.
The F3 season is over, but the work goes on for Piastri. The Renault Sport Academy driver was at the Turkish Grand Prix on work experience last month with the Renault F1 team. Prema have now also confirmed that Piastri will be racing at the post-season test with them in Formula 2 machinery at Bahrain.
19-year-old Piastri expressed his thanks for staying with his current employer. It’s unclear from his statement whether Oscar is more excited about Formula 2 or another season of Italian eating, however.
Oscar Piastri on moving to Formula 2 with Prema:
“Prema has proven to be the team to beat once again in F2 this year, so I’m extremely happy to be moving into the championship with them. I’m very grateful to stay a part of the Prema family, and I’m looking forward to plenty more pizza and pasta!”
The promotion adds fuel to the already out of control forest fire that Schumacher will be graduating to F1 in 2021. The earliness of this announcement for Piastri suggests that Prema know Schumacher will not be racing for them next season, regardless of him winning the Formula 2 title this weekend or not.
