Felipe Drugovich will be a UNI-Virtuosi driver for 2021 in another step forward for the 20-year-old Brazilian. Drugovich’s Formula 2 season has turned heads throughout the year with three victories with MP Motorsport. UNI-Virtuosi’s head must have turned a little more than others… Or perhaps the prospect of racing for the consistently quick team excited Felipe more than any other offers on the table. Either way, Drugovich will be joining the British outfit for 2021.
Felipe Drugovich must now be considered a title contender for 2021. Should he follow in the footsteps of Callum Ilott who was close but not close enough this year, Felipe will be able to mount his championship challenge high up the starting grid. UNI-Virtuosi claimed six of a possible twelve pole positions in 2020, five belonging to Ilott.
MP Motorsport did show real promise throughout this season, partially aided by the omission of a certain man from Chennai. But they still finished four positions behind 2020 vice-champions UNI-Virtuosi for a reason.
The Norfolk-based team have some serious pedigree as a front-running outfit. Including their previous guise of Russian Time, UNI have won or finished second in the teams’ championship for three of the four seasons Formula 2 has existed in its current branding.
Couple the know-how of the UNI team with the impressive drives seen by Felipe Drugovich in 2020 and you have a 2021 title challenger.
Felipe Drugovich to test for UNI ahead of 2021
There’s no time for sentiment in Formula 2. It will be Felipe Drugovich partnering Guanyu Zhou at the post-season test this week, not Ilott. The post-season test is taking place at Bahrain, the same venue that the F2 season will kick off again in March next year.
Felipe Drugovich will use the test to help him hit the ground running with his new team in 2021. Meanwhile, his old team, MP Motorsport are running with Louis Deletraz and Lirim Zendeli, the Trident F3 driver, for the three-day event.
