Renault rewarded the F3 champion Oscar Piastri for his championship success by giving the Australian an insight into how an F1 weekend works. Piastri spent his weekend at Turkey in briefings and meetings with the team, as well as seeing how a drivers media duties work.
The opportunity gives Oscar a great look at how an experienced driver such as fellow Aussie Ricciardo gives feedback to his engineers. Piastri also was able to build up relationships with key members of Renault’s management team with his close proximity throughout the weekend.
With Esteban Ocon also driving for Prema back in his European Formula 3 days, Piastri was able to find a common ground with both drivers. Of course, the Australian connection with Ricciardo made for an instant rapport with the shared experience of being so far from home.
Aussie out, Aussie in. Oscar Piastri for Daniel Ricciardo?
Renault, of course, will be encouraged that after losing one highly-rated Australian driver, ahead of 2021, they have another shaping up to be quite the talent. There is currently no word on where Piastri will race next year. Oscar has confirmed he will be stepping up to Formula 2, but at which team is still unknown.
After Piastri won two races in his F3 campaign, with a further four podium finishes. His 2020 triumph marks two consecutive campaigns. Oscar won the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup series too. Should his impressive performances continuing into F2, Piastri could be knocking at the door of Renault F1 for 2022. If so, it would come just in time for the new F1 regulations…
Whether or not will see Piastri for Renault in a practice session during the 2021 season is unknown. But his work experience outing at Istanbul Park will put him in great stead if Renault does choose to allow Oscar to tip his toes into the F1 world next year.
